2025 Ernie Cooke Handicap Squash Tournament

Dear [[firstname]],

Falmouth Sports Club’s Ernie Cooke Squash Handicap Tournament will take place from 31st March – 11th April 2025 .

Sign-Up Details:

Even if you sign up online, you must pay at the bar before the registration deadline.

What is a Handicap Tournament?

Handicap tournaments create a level playing field, giving every participant a fair chance of winning—regardless of skill level. Players are assigned a handicap based on their ability, with more experienced players needing to score more points to win.

How It Works:

Players receive a handicap number based on their skill level.
The difference between two players’ handicaps determines how many extra points the stronger player must score to win. Players will start each game on score modified by their handicap (positive or negative). If both players handicaps are positive or both players handicaps are negative then the starting scores are adjusted so that one player starst on zero.
See the table below for examples.

Scenario Player A Player B Difference Starting Points
Both negative handicaps -12 -5 7 A starts at -7, B at 0
Negative vs Zero handicaps -20 0 20 A starts at -20, B at 0
Opposite handicaps -15 +3 18 A starts at -15, B at +3
Both positive handicaps +3 +5 2 A starts a 0, B at +2

Tournament Format

The tournament runs over two weeks.
Matches will be scheduled as follows:

  • First Round: Monday 31st March
  • Second Round: Wednesday 2nd April
  • Third Round: Monday 7th April
  • Semi-Finals: Wednesday 9th April
  • Finals: Friday 11th April at 7pm

Each match will have a set playtime, but you may reschedule if needed—as long as the match is played before the next round.

Knockout & Plate Draw:

It’s a knockout tournament, but if you lose your first match, you’ll enter the plate draw—guaranteeing at least two matches.

We’d love to see you on court! If you have any questions, feel free to reply to this email.

Best wishes,
FSC Committee
