 FSC Squash Finals Night

The Falmouth Sports Club Annual Squash Championship came to a close on friday evening. There was a good turn out of members to watch both the Plate and Main Final.

The Plate Final was contested by the evergreen Nick Banfield and highly experienced Steve Riley. This promised to be a close encounter and it didn't disappoint. Nick started strongly and just pipped Steve to the first game 15-13.  Steve, once warmed up, responded with a disciplined display of controlled squash, to edge the second 13-15. With the game finely balanced, Steve began to assert his mark on the match and took the third in comfortable fashion. At 2-1 down, Nick's South African resilience kicked in, and the match developed into a battle of wills. A momentary loss of concentration on Nick's part proved costly. Steve, once again, saw his chance and snatched victory in the fourth and with it the match. The contest had indeed lived up to expectations.

The main Final was contested by the youthful Joel Brickell and not so youthful, Jerry Thomas. Against all predictions, Thomas found himself with a commanding lead in the first but failed to convert this position into a point. The first game slipped away and left Thomas chasing the remaining two games. Joel's superior fitness and shotplay, proved too much for older player, who battled on to make a fight of it, but the result was inevitable, 3-0.

Many thanks to all those that attended, to support what turned out to be a very enjoyable evening with some interesting Squash and humour supplied by Terry Beckett - Thomas being the butt of most of his jokes.
